These beautiful and historic French Gold Angels are an outstanding choice for European gold coin collectors and gold bullion investors. One of the only pre-1900 European gold coins trading near their gold value.
These French Gold Angels coins are ungraded, in AU to Uncirculated condition. Dates range from 1871-1898. Mint State Gold selects the dates you receive and feels confident that you will be very pleased with the selections.
Angels in AU to Uncirculated condition are far more scarce than later date French 20 Franc Roosters and Swiss 20 Franc Helvetias. Unavailable for more than half a century, recently a few small caches of Angels have turned up in Europe, perhaps left over from the war.
Minted from 1871-1898, the magnificent “Guardian Angel” design on the obverse, originally created by Augustine Dupré during the French Revolution, was resurrected in 1871 for this French 20 franc gold coin.
Best known for bringing good luck to their owners, the “Lucky Angel” has a fascinating legend behind it dating back to the French Revolution. The legend began during the Reign of Terror in the mid-1790s, when the coin’s designer claimed to have been saved from the guillotine by the lucky Angel coin in his pocket. Almost from the beginning, gold Angels were regarded as lucky charms. French pilots in World War I rarely took flight without a gold Angel coin in their pocket and during World War II, the chief of Hitler’s Luftwaffe, Hermann Goering, became obsessed with these French Angel coins, confiscating all he could find.
Mint State Gold is proud to offer only premium quality (PQ) coins to our investor and collector clientele. Each one of our coins is hand inspected before sale to make sure our customers receive PQ coins at low prices.
Bullion item prices are based on the current precious metal market spot prices. Bullion prices fluctuate, just like the market. Once we contact you with your final item price, and you accept, the price cannot be renegotiated based on what the market may do in the following days. You may, however, sell your bullion items back to us based on current market bid prices if you like. Bullion purchases are just like stock purchases and all trades are final.
