As the first .9999 fine, 24-karat gold coins ever struck by the United States Mint, American Buffalo 1oz Gold Bullion Coins are ideal for both first-time gold buyers and serious gold investors.
The coin pictured is a representation of our uncirculated, 1oz $50 American Gold Buffalo coins. The date(s) of the coins you receive may be from one, or a range of dates from 2006 to the present. Mint State Gold selects the date(s) you will receive and feels confident you will be very pleased with the selections.
The coin's obverse (front) and reverse (back) feature images originally prepared in 1913 by noted American sculptor James Earle Fraser. Fraser, once a student of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, originally prepared the designs for the U.S. five-cent coin, known as the Indian Head or Buffalo nickel.
The Native American depiction on the obverse is believed to be based on three different American Indians. Two of the American Indians who modeled for Fraser as he sculpted the coin were named by the designer before his death. They were known as Chief Iron Tail of the Lakota Sioux and Chief Two Moons of the Cheyenne. Although many have claimed to have had a sitting with Fraser for this design, he could not recall the name of the third person and satisfactory documentation has not yet been found to identify that individual. It is widely believed that the bison on the coins reverse was modeled after Black Diamond, a popular attraction at the New York Zoological Gardens.
Gold Buffalo coins are a safe, secure, and convenient method of investing in gold and adding precious metals to your portfolio. Gold Buffalo are legal U.S. tender and are one of only two modern gold bullion coins backed by the U.S. government for weight and gold content.
