American Gold Eagle History and Background

The passage of the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985 authorized the production of American Eagle coins. They were released the following year and immediately became one of the world’s most popular bullion coins to buy for investment.

Mint State Gold sells American Eagles in four sizes — 1/10 oz., 1/4 oz., 1/2 oz., and 1 oz. These sizes have face values of $5, $10, $25, and $50, respectively. While they’re legal tender, the majority are bought and sold based on the market price of the gold they contain plus a small premium, a total value that is much higher than their face value.
