Copper — often alloyed with other materials — is one of the many metals used for coinage in the U.S. and abroad. In fact, the very first coin produced by the U.S. Mint, the 1793 Chain Cent — was made from copper. Since then, the Mint has issued several famous copper coins, many of which are coveted by collectors today. Mint State Gold is one of the few places where you can buy rare copper coins online. If you're interested in starting or expanding your collection, we can help. Check out our current inventory using the links on this page.

Our Products

As one of the largest online vendors of precious metals and coins, Mint State Gold frequently has rare copper coins for sale. Our inventory often includes:

  • Indian Cents: The classic Indian Cent coin was initially made from a mix of copper and nickel, and later from bronze. The series was in production from 1859 to 1909. Though it underwent several changes over the years, the basic design was the brainchild of Chief Engraver James B. Longacre and featured a young girl in a feathered headdress. On the reverse is a simple wreath encircling the inscription "ONE CENT."

  • Classic Head Cents: The short-lived Classic Head Cent is one of the earliest copper coins produced by the U.S. Mint. The Mint issued it from 1808 to 1814. Today, collectors remember it for its simple design, created by Chief Engraver Robert Scot, with a draped bust portrait of Lady Liberty on the obverse.

Why Collect Copper Coins?

There are many reasons why collectors would seek out copper coins from different eras of the U.S. Mint's history. Copper coins are often more affordable than gold or silver products from a similar time, making them more accessible to anyone interested in the evolution of our currency over time. Also, since the Mint produced far more copper and bronze products than silver and gold, there are more to collect and more variations to explore, making them a fascinating subject to research and study.

Like any collectible product, old and rare copper coins can fluctuate in value, giving them some investment potential when purchased judiciously. If you're willing to research the market, copper coins can be a worthwhile alternative to other precious metals.
