$2.50 Liberty Gold Coin Production History

$2.50 Liberty Head gold coins were minted between 1840 and 1907. Their design was the result of a years-long search by the U.S. Mint for a symbol that could be used on coinage well into the future. Engraver Christian Gobrecht created the image that was finally settled on.

Alternately known as the "Coronet," Liberty Head coins feature the head of Liberty in profile, facing left and wearing a crown that reads “LIBERTY.” Around the edge of the coin’s obverse is a ring of 13 stars, representing the original colonies. On the reverse is a heraldic eagle, created by John Reich in 1808 but modified by Gobrecht to suit the new coin.

Liberty Gold Quarter Eagles were minted at the U.S. Mint’s Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega, New Orleans, and San Francisco facilities. All but the Philadelphia coins feature a mint mark on the reverse face. Over the years, the U.S. Mint produced more than 11 million business strike $2.50 Gold Liberty coins, as well as an estimated over 4,000 proofs. Today, the majority of surviving proofs date from the years post-1860.

The long production history of the $2.50 Gold Liberty Head coin contains many noteworthy issues, though none perhaps more so than the 1848 “CAL.” series. Following the discovery of gold in California, 230 ounces of ore were shipped to Washington, where authorities refined and minted it into 1,389 uniquely stamped Quarter Eagles. These feature the abbreviation “CAL.” on the reverse side, and are considered by many to be the first commemorative coin issued by the U.S. Mint.

The Liberty Quarter Gold coin series ended up being one of the longest-running coins ever produced in the U.S. Its minting mirrored a period of both rapid development and turmoil in the country, a fact that makes it a fascinating object of study and collection in its own right.
