$2.50 Indian Head Eagle Coin Background and Design

The U.S. Mint produced $2.50 Gold Indians from 1908 to 1929. On the obverse face is the head of a Native American in profile, wearing a full ceremonial headdress. On the reverse is an eagle perched on a bundle of arrows.

The most notable feature of the Quarter Eagle and the $5 Half Eagle which was produced at the same time is its use of the incuse relief technique. Whereas most modern coinage has raised bas-relief elements, design details on the Quarter Eagle are sunken into its surface. The Quarter Eagle also lacks the outer edge found on all other U.S. currency.

To date, the $2.50 and $5 Indian Heads are the only U.S. currency to use the incuse relief technique. This method was intended to prevent wear and tear, and keep individual coins in circulation for longer. For collectors today, it means that surviving $5 and $2.50 Indian Head coins are often better preserved than other currency from that period.

The coin’s designer, Bela Lyon Pratt, was met with a considerable amount of criticism of his work. Despite its later acclaim, many numismatists condemned the artistry of the Indian Head design, which Pratt based partially on the standing eagle motif created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Among the public, there was a fear that the engraved details would promote the spread of germs. As a result, few Indian Heads were collected, and today, finding high-quality examples can be a challenge.

Your Source Online for Quarter Eagle Gold Coins

$2.50 Indian Head Gold coins are part of American numismatic history, and a rare instance when an unconventional coin remained in circulation for years. Because of their use of incuse relief, Quarter Eagle gold coins have more in common with antique currency than 20th-century coinage. For this reason alone, they are a worthy object of collection and study.
