American Gold Buffalo Coin History and Background

The American Buffalo series was the result of the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005, which authorized the production of up to 300,000 1-oz., 24-karat gold bullion coins with a face value of $50. Upon its release the following year, the coin was well-received by both collectors, who praised its design, and investors looking for U.S. alternatives to the 22-karat, 91.67% pure American Eagle series.

The popularity of the initial run led to the 2008 release of three fractional denominations: $5 (1/10 oz.), $10 (1/4 oz.) and $25 (1/2 oz.).

Design and Minting

The U.S. Mint modeled the Gold Buffalo design after the famous Indian Head nickel of 1913. That coin, created by sculptor James Earle Fraser, featured a Native American chief on the obverse — a composite of models from three tribes — and an American Bison on the reverse. The Gold Buffalo mostly preserved this design, with the main differences being the presence of the words "$50 1 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD" and "IN GOD WE TRUST" on the Bison side.

American Buffalos are minted at the West Point facility. Both bullion and Proof versions are available, the latter of which is distinguishable by a “W” mint mark found on the obverse.

In 2008, the U.S. Mint produced a small quantity of burnished American Gold Buffalo coins. These were created using a similar minting process as the Proof coins, but the Proof die is left unpolished for a matte appearance some collectors prefer.
