Gold and the Royal Canadian Mint

The Royal Canadian Mint was created in 1908, producing the country's first domestically minted coin — a 50 cent piece — that year. Founded at the height of the country's northern gold rush, the organization has a long history of working with precious metals. The RCM built its own refinery in 1911, where it took raw gold and produced bullion-quality bars for Great Britain. Increasing demand led to the creation of a new refinery in 1936. With that, the RCM began offering its services to more countries around the world.

Despite this, it wasn’t until 1979 that the Royal Canadian Mint produced its first Canadian gold coins. Three years later, the organization became the first to mint .9999 fine gold bullion coins. In 1999, they broke another barrier, producing bullion with .99999 purity.

Buying and Collecting Canadian Maple Leaf Coins

Today, the Royal Canadian Mint produces its Gold Canadian Maple Leaf coins in $50, one-ounce versions, and several fractional denominations. The design features a maple leaf, the national symbol of Canada, on the reverse. The obverse currently depicts Susanna Blunt’s 2003 design of Queen Elizabeth II in profile.

Because Royal Canadian Mint gold coins are so pure, they are not meant for general circulation. Rather, their value is tied to the market price of gold, making them an excellent choice for investors. At 99.999%, the Gold Maple Leaf is the purest gold bullion coin being sold by any country today.
