Burnished Gold Buffalos

Gold Buffalos are a perennially popular gold bullion coin first produced in 2006. To appeal to both investors and collectors, the U.S. Mint has issued a limited run of burnished coins in the Buffalo’s production. Notable for both their good looks and limited availability, Burnished Gold Buffalos offer investment potential as well as aesthetic appeal.

Background

The Gold Buffalo was created partly to fill the need for a 24-karat, 0.9999% fine U.S. gold coin. It has a face value of $50 and is made from 1 oz. of gold.

However, in 2008 only, the U.S. Mint issued three fractional denominations: $5, $10, and $25 in proof and burnished strikes. All versions feature James Earle Fraser's Buffalo Nickel design, which was first used between 1913 and 1938. The most notable change involves the addition of the motto "In God We Trust," which is now required for all U.S. coinage.

Burnished Gold Buffalos

For most years of the Gold Buffalo coin program, only business strike and proof versions were issued. However, in 2008 the U.S. Mint released a short run of Burnished Gold Buffalos. Burnished coins employ a similar production process as proof coins, using a special die that creates sharper strikes and crisper details. However, burnished coins omit the final polishing step and, as a result, lack the mirror finish typically associated with proofs.

In 2008, the U.S. Mint produced Burnished Gold Buffalos at their West Point facility, in all four denominations.

Our Inventory

We have a carefully chosen selection of $50, $25, $10, and $5 Burnished Gold Buffalos for sale in our online store, both individually and as complete sets. Our inventory primarily includes coins certified either MS70 by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), or SP70 by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). We do occasionally have ungraded, Brilliant Uncirculated Burnished Buffalos for sale in their original government packaging, with an accompanying certificate of authenticity.

Many of our Burnished Buffalos are certified First Strike, which means their production date is within the first 30 days of minting. These coins typically display even more delicate details and are among the most sought after by collectors.
