Saint Gaudens Coin Design and Production

President Theodore Roosevelt personally recommended sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens for the task of overhauling the Double Eagle coin design in 1904. In Roosevelt’s view, U.S. currency lacked the beauty of its continental counterparts — bringing on an outside artist was part of his effort to change this.

Initially, Saint-Gaudens wanted a high-relief surface like the hand-struck coins of Ancient Greece. When this proved technically impossible to recreate on a mass scale, production moved forward with a more conventional design. The finished product featured the allegorical image of Lady Liberty on the obverse and an eagle in flight on the reverse. First released in 1907, the coin remained in use — with a few minor changes over the years — until 1933.

Why Collect Saint Gaudens Gold Coins?

Collectors prize Saint-Gaudens $20 gold coins for their beauty and historical value. A variation on the design was reintroduced in 1986, when production of gold currency began again for the first time since the discontinuation of the original Double Eagle. In 2009, to finally fulfill Saint-Gaudens’ original vision for the coin, the U.S. Mint produced an ultra-high relief version in limited numbers.

Like all gold coins produced before 1933, Saint-Gaudens are considered a collectible rather than an investment product. This gives them some advantages from a taxation and privacy standpoint. If you’re considering investing in gold as a hedge against market uncertainty, purchasing a Saint-Gaudens coin is one of the best ways to protect your privacy while doing so.
