What Is Platinum?

Platinum is a hard, lustrous metal. Though unknown to Europeans before the colonization of the New World, there's evidence to suggest it was used and prized by civilizations around the world for centuries prior. Today, only two locations mine platinum on a commercial scale: South Africa and the Ural Mountains in Russia. Extracting it is an extremely labor-intensive process — obtaining even a single ounce requires removing more than 10 tons of ore.

Despite its scarcity, platinum is essential for several products, such as automotive catalytic converters and various electronic, laboratory, and medical devices. Many high-end jewelry makers also prefer platinum to gold because of its strength and durability.

Platinum Coins for Sale from Mint State Gold

The Mint State Gold catalog includes several platinum bullion coins. We sell:

  • U.S. Platinum Eagles: The Platinum Eagle is the U.S. Mint's official platinum bullion coin. Platinum Eagles have a face value of $100 and contain one troy ounce of .9995 pure platinum. On the obverse face, they feature an image of Lady Liberty designed by John M. Mercanti. On the reverse is an eagle in flight designed by Thomas D. Rogers Sr. Combined with platinum's natural brilliance, the effect is striking — many collectors consider the Platinum Eagle to be one of the mint's most attractive bullion products.
  • Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf Coins: The Royal Canadian Mint produced its first Platinum Maple Leaf in 1988. Today, it is one of the most popular options for anyone who wants to invest in this valuable metal. The one-ounce, 9995 pure Platinum Maple Leaf with a face value of $50 is the mint’s official platinum bullion coin.
  • Australian Platinum Coins: Australia has also minted platinum bullion coins, many of which celebrate the country’s unique wildlife. Mint State Gold sells both Mint State (MS) certified and ungraded Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) platinum Australian platypus and koala coins.
