American Silver Eagle Background and History

Authorized by the Liberty Coin Act of 1985, the new American Silver Eagle coin was to be made from one troy ounce of 99.9% pure silver and produced at the Mint's San Francisco, Philadelphia, and West Point facilities. Over the years, the U.S. Mint has released three main versions:

  • A bullion coin, which has been minted steadily since the program's inception.
  • A Proof coin for the collectors’ market, which has been released every year of the program except 2009 and features a mint mark based on the facility that produced it.
  • A Burnished coin, which is similar to the Proof version, but struck using a special blank. Burnished Silver Eagles have been released in 2006, 2007, and 2008, and every year since 2011.

Our inventory includes bullion, Proof, and Burnished Silver Eagle dollar coins from several different years. Our Proof (PF) and Mint State (MS) products are graded by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) or the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). We also carry ungraded Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) Silver Eagles.

Design

The obverse face of the Silver Eagle features the “Walking Liberty” design by Adolph Weinman, initially used on the Silver half-dollar of 1916. The reverse of the coin displays a modern take on the Great Seal of the United States, created by sculptor-engraver John Mercanti, with an eagle holding an olive branch in one talon and a set of arrows in the other.

The incorporation of the Walking Liberty, one of the most popular and well-received coin designs of all time, is a fitting choice for the reintroduction of U.S. silver coinage. The collaboration between old and new traditions speaks to the important role silver has played in the history of both the U.S. Mint and the broader American economy.
