These fine 1908 Saint Gaudens “No Motto” $20 Gold pieces, graded Choice MS64 by either PCGS or NGC, are wonderful examples of the grade. The fields are smooth and pristine and the devices well-struck. With good detail, bold contrast, and captivating overall eye-appeal, these coins are high end for their grade. A favorite among investors and collectors, MS64 graded coins have continued to appreciate due to their significant role in U.S. history, attractiveness to collectors, and brilliant precious metal content.
The scarce "NO MOTTO" variety of $20 Saints has a very intriguing history... President Teddy Roosevelt, an otherwise religious man, felt that the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" violated the constitutional separation of church and state. He felt that God's name had no business being on US money and demanded that "IN GOD WE TRUST" be taken off the coin. Congressional and public influence and protest restored the motto in the latter part of 1908, where it remained until the series ended in 1933. The low surviving population, rare "No Motto" variety, and high choice grade of MS64, give these dazzling gold coins excellent upside potential, as well.
MS64 graded coins have also maintained higher levels of ‘average annual return on investment’ than lower graded Mint State coins. According to the well respected Lombra Study commissioned by the U.S. Congress, the average annual returns from 1979-2008 were between 11.5% and 13.4% for coins graded between MS63-64 year over year! That's higher than any other traditional investment tool including stocks, bonds, t-bills, savings accounts, savings bonds, and so on; making MS64 coins a fantastic buy for the long term investor!
