This lovely 1914 San Francisco $20 Gold Saint Gaudens has been awarded the Choice MS62 grade from PCGS. Both the obverse (front side) and reverse (back) devices exhibit plenty of sharp detail and the fields are lustrous, clear, and smooth. With full original mint shine and a respectable strike all-around, this is a very attractive MS62 example from this mintage. Though a significant number of Saint Gaudens gold coins were minted during 1914 in San Francisco, most have been lost to circulation or melted during massive bullion melts. Only a small percentage has survived to grade in Mint State condition by PCGS.

Minted from 1907-1933, these $20 gold coins, known as St. Gaudens Double Eagles are considered by many to be the most beautiful type of U.S. coin ever minted. Augustus Saint-Gaudens was the first sculptor to ever design an American coin. In late 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt called upon the renowned American sculptor to redesign the U.S. $20 Gold Double Eagle coin. Roosevelt considered U.S. coinage to be ‘ugly’ and it was his desire for American coins to be as beautiful as the coins of ancient Greece. Production of the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle coins continued from 1907 until 1933, with a brief two year hiatus from 1917-1918. More than half a century after production ceased on the magnificent gems, the U.S. mint bestowed an incredible honor upon The Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle in 1986 when they decided to place the design on the obverse (front) of the American Eagle gold bullion coin, the United States #1 gold coin produced today!
