Overview of Silver Half Dollars
The U.S. Mint produced the first American silver half dollar in 1794, known as the Flowing Hair Half Dollar. This design was followed by several more featuring a bust of Liberty design as well as the Seated Liberty Half Dollar minted from 1839 to 1891. In 1916, the mint began producing the iconic Walking Liberty Half Dollars, the final half dollar design to feature Liberty. In 1948, the Benjamin Franklin Silver Half Dollar was minted then replaced with the Kennedy Half Dollar in 1964. In 1965, the silver content in half dollars was reduced from 90% to 40% until eventually in 1971 the Mint halted production of silver half dollars, turning to the modern copper-nickel clad coins we’re familiar with today.
Overview of Silver Quarters
Featuring Liberty on the obverse and an eagle on the reverse, the first American silver quarter was minted in 1796. The Quarter continued to display designs of Lady Liberty through 1931, including the iconic Standing Liberty design showing her stepping through the opening in a wall, wielding a shield and an olive branch. Liberty held her ground on the obverse of the quarter until 1932, when she was replaced with an image of George Washington to celebrate his 200th birthday. He was featured on the U.S. quarter along with an Eagle until 1999, when the Mint began the 50 State Quarters Program, their first of many circulating coin programs. In 1965, silver was removed from the composition of the quarter to be replaced with the same copper-nickel clad coins used in the production of most modern U.S. currency.
Overview of Silver Dimes
The first U.S. dime was produced in 1796, with an image of Lady Liberty on its obverse and an eagle on the reverse. Adolph A. Weinman, designer of the Walking Liberty Half Dollar’s iconic faces, designed the Mercury Dime that was then produced from 1916-1945. This coin was thought to be one of the most beautiful coins in our country’s history, featuring Liberty in a winged cap that resembled the Roman god Mercury which earned it its name. The Mercury Dime was replaced with the Roosevelt dime that we know now in 1946, though silver was removed from the production of U.S. dimes in 1964.
Circulated Conditions
Our silver rolls are offered in ungraded, circulated condition. The common conditions we sell are:
VG (Very Good) to XF (Extra Fine): This condition means the coins have been circulated in society and exhibit moderate to severe traces of wear, with possible cleaning, surface abrasions, or a combination of all these characteristics. Little to no original mint luster will be present and there may be light to heavy toning.
AU (About Uncirculated): This condition means the coins may appear uncirculated but with closer inspection can reveal moderate traces of wear, evidence of friction visible on high points. Half to three-quarters of the original mint luster will still be present.
Uncirculated condition
BU (Brilliant Uncirculated): This condition means the silver coins have never been circulated in society, and will generally retain full original mint luster. They will exhibit minimal bag marks or abrasions.
Rolls
It is very hard to find original rolls like the ones we feature here! Rolls in better condition are often broken up by dealers who sell them as individual coins. The coins you receive will always be in the advertised condition, we will never cherry pick through the roll or replace them with cleaned or slider coins.
Investing in Silver
Silver is a precious metal with a long history of use as currency. Today, its importance to manufacturing, jewelry making, and a wide range of industrial processes drives global demand. However, because of its abundance, it is the most affordable precious metal, and a useful entry point to commodity investing. Many experts believe a portfolio containing some precious metals is more resilient to market fluctuations over time. If you're interested in investing in silver, Mint State Gold can help.
