About $10 Indian Head Gold Coin

The U.S. Mint produced $10 Indian Head Gold coins between 1907 and 1933. Along with the $20 Double Eagle Saint-Gaudens, they were among the last gold coins minted in the US for a period of more than 70 years.

President Theodore Roosevelt tasked noted sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens to redesign the country’s coinage, from the penny to the double eagle. He worked on the sketches from his studio in Cornish, New Hampshire, and nearly completed work for two of the denominations the $10 and $20, which were first struck in 1907.

The $10 design had a female wearing an Indian war bonnet on the obverse. The reverse features an eagle perched on a branch, the design that was used the following year in a modified form for 1908’s $2.50 and $5 coins.

Other notable characteristics of the $10 Indian Head Gold coin include the presence of 46 raised stars around the coin’s rim, instead of the conventional raised edge. Two additional stars were added in 1912 following the admission of New Mexico and Arizona to the union. As well, in 1908, the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” was added, following an act of Congress mandating its presence on all coinage.
