Popular European Coins

From Ancient Greece and Rome to Medieval England, European civilizations have been using gold as currency for thousands of years. Collecting European gold coins is a great alternative to focusing exclusively on American products. If you're looking to begin or expand a collection, or for a European gold coin with strong investment potential, we can help. Mint State Gold is your online source for rare coins and precious metals. British Gold Sovereigns

Britain’s Royal Mint issued the British Sovereign between 1817 and 1917, and intermittently in the years since. Containing over 1/5 ounce of gold, British Sovereigns are one of the most popular and most commonly traded European fractional gold bullion coins. The obverse of the coin features a portrait of the reigning monarch at the time of minting. Various reverse designs have been used, including a famous portrayal of St. George killing a dragon, based on an engraving by the Italian Benedetto Pistrucci.

We routinely have pre-1933 gold British Sovereigns for sale in About Uncirculated (AU) and Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition, as well as newer coins graded Mint State (MS).

French Gold Coins

French gold coins are a popular choice among both collectors and investors. 20-Franc French Napoleons were minted between 1852-1870. 20-Franc French Roosters were introduced in 1899 and produced until 1914. Both are made with .900 fine gold.

In our online store, you’ll find French Gold Roosters and French Napoleons for sale in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition. We also sell lots of Mint State (MS) graded French Gold Angels. Visit individual product pages for pricing and details.

Swiss Gold 20-Franc Helvetias

Swiss gold coins are another popular choice among collectors and investors. The landlocked country primarily minted gold coins in the period between 1897 and 1936, with a few attempts at revival later. All Swiss gold coins are made from 0.900 gold and feature the country’s coat of arms on its obverse face.

Swiss Helvetia coins for sale from Mint State Gold include a number of fine examples from both pre- and post-1933 periods. Looking for something in particular? Call or email our office to speak with a representative directly.

Why Collect Gold Coins?

Gold coins from Europe have strong investment potential as well as intrinsic collectors’ value. Investors often use gold as a hedge against market or currency uncertainty. Pre-1933 coins are considered collectible purchases rather than investments, which means they’re exempt from Form 1099 reporting — a key benefit for anyone concerned about the tax or privacy implications of buying gold.

On this page, you’ll find links to the current inventory of gold European coins sold by Mint State Gold. We also have an extensive inventory of American gold and silver coins, as well as bullion from Australia, Asia, Latin America, and beyond. Keep browsing our website to explore your options.
