Legislative Background

The U.S. Mint produced Morgan dollars in the period between 1878 and 1904, and again in 1921. Morgan dollars replaced the Seated Liberty dollar, which was abolished in 1873 following a long debate around the use of silver bullion as legal tender.

However, the free coinage of silver soon regained political support. In 1876, the passage of the Bland-Allison Act required the Treasury to purchase a minimum of two million dollars' worth of silver per month and put it into circulation in the form of dollar coins.

Minting and Design History

Morgan dollars are named after their designer, George Morgan, an English-born engraver employed with the U.S. Mint. Morgan's design featured the image of Lady Liberty on the obverse and an eagle on the reverse, and was immediately put into production at the Mint's Philadelphia, Carson City, and San Francisco facilities.

Investing in Morgan Dollars

Morgan dollars are a good choice for anyone interested in silver, although they tend to be considered collectible items rather than investment products. You can visit our Investor Library to learn more.

Collecting Morgan Dollars

Morgan dollars are also sought-after on the collectors' market. Subtle details in the coin’s design were revised multiple times during its production, and today there is considerable interest in collecting and cataloging different varieties.

Mint State Gold carries business strike and Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) Morgan dollars, including rare items that are hard to find elsewhere. We work with leading organizations such as the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) to certify our MS coins, so you can shop with confidence knowing you are getting a product that lives up to its description. We also offer a 14-day satisfaction guarantee on all numismatic items.
