Overview of Morgan Dollars

The U.S. Mint produced Morgan Silver dollars in the period between 1878 and 1904, and again in 1921. Morgan dollars replaced the Seated Liberty dollar, which was abolished in 1873 following a long debate around the use of silver bullion as legal tender. Morgan Silver dollars are named after their designer, George Morgan, an English-born engraver employed with the U.S. Mint. Morgan's design featured the image of Lady Liberty on the obverse and an eagle on the reverse, and was immediately put into production at the Mint's Philadelphia, Carson City, and San Francisco facilities.
