Collecting American Buffalos

The U.S. Mint has produced American Buffalo gold coins in limited numbers every year since 2006. All are minted in the organization's West Point facility and feature a design based on the famous 1913 Indian Head nickel, created by sculptor James Earle Fraser.

Initially, the U.S. Mint was authorized only to produce a 1-oz. American Buffalo. However, the coin’s popularity created a high demand for fractional denominations. In 2008, the standard $50 American Buffalo was complemented by limited-run $5 (1/10 oz.), $10 (1/4 oz.) and $25 (1/2 oz.) denominations.
