About Gold Buffalos

American Gold Buffalos have a face value of $50 and contain one troy ounce of 24-karat, .9999 fine gold. They are the purest U.S. gold bullion product currently available for sale — until their production, American gold bullion options were limited to the 22-karat Gold Eagle series. By filling this market need, they compete directly with the 24-karat Canadian Maple Leaf and other international investment products.

The West Point facility in New York produces the Gold Buffalos. The Mint guarantees the weight, content, and purity of each coin. As a result, they are one of the most secure ways to buy precious metals, particularly when purchased from a reputable dealer like Mint State Gold.

Design Background

The Gold Buffalo's striking design features a buffalo on the reverse face and a Native American chief in profile on the obverse. It incorporates elements from the Buffalo five-cent piece, which was in circulation from 1913 to 1938. Created by sculptor James Earle Fraser, the Buffalo Nickel received praise for its realism. Unlike early numismatic portraits of Native Americans, which tended to have distinctly classical features, Fraser's design was a composite of three chiefs who had posed for him years earlier. The buffalo on the reverse was thought to be modeled on "Black Diamond," a popular attraction at the New York Zoological Gardens.

By drawing from Fraser’s design, the Gold Buffalo speaks to the U.S. Mint’s history, while meeting a distinctly modern need for a high-purity gold bullion product.

Why Invest in Gold

Business strike gold bullion products such as the U.S. Buffalo are sold and traded at the market rate for gold, plus a small premium based on availability and quantity, and a dealer markup. They offer excellent liquidity, and low overall fees, making them an excellent choice for anyone who wants to add precious metals to their portfolio.
