Collecting American Buffalos

The U.S. Mint has produced American Buffalo gold coins in limited numbers every year since 2006. All are minted in the organization's West Point facility and feature a design based on the famous 1913 Indian Head nickel, created by sculptor James Earle Fraser.

Initially, the U.S. Mint was authorized only to produce a 1-oz. American Buffalo. However, the coin’s popularity created a high demand for fractional denominations. In 2008, the standard $50 American Buffalo was complemented by limited-run $5 (1/10 oz.), $10 (1/4 oz.) and $25 (1/2 oz.) denominations.

Our Inventory

Both collectors and investors prize American Buffalo gold coins for their unique combination of value, beauty, and historical significance. Our catalog includes:

  • Bullion Coins: 1-oz. American Buffalo gold bullion coins are commonly purchased for investment purposes. They're made from 99.99% pure 24-karat gold. Many investors buy high-purity gold to diversify their portfolios and consider it a hedge against inflation and the uncertainty of the stock market. If you’re new to buying gold, be sure to check out our Investor Education section to read useful articles about grading and certification.
  • Proof Coins: Proof coins are minted using a unique die process that produces intricately detailed images and a polished, mirror-like finish — they’re intended primarily for the collectors’ market. The majority of our Gold American Buffalo Proof coins are graded either PR Deep Cameo or PF Ultra Cameo and have been certified by either the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) or the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC).
  • Burnished Coins: The U.S. Mint produced burnished American Buffalo gold coins in limited numbers in 2008. Burnished coins are created using a similar die process as Proof coins, but are left unpolished for a unique appearance. Because of the relative rarity of burnished gold Buffalos, they are among the most sought-after by collectors.
