Gold

Gold started August in the $4,000 per ounce area and steadily moved up all month, reaching a high of $4,700 by August 25th. Then we saw short-term profit-taking and Russian selling in late August, driving the value down to $4,320 by September 3rd. Gold closed Friday at $4,430 per ounce, down $26 for the week.

August job numbers were announced on September 2nd. Only 38,000 were added, well below the forecast of 47,000. Gold started moving higher because of this. The speculation is that this will cause the Fed to have second thoughts on raising interest rates later this month.

Over the long weekend, the Iranian war has heated up, with the average number of ships traveling through the Strait of Hormuz falling to the lowest levels since May.

U.S. Central Command said Sunday that American forces enforcing the maritime blockade against Iranian ports have redirected 92 commercial vessels. Iran’s Supreme National Security Council chief, Mohsen Rezaei, warned that Tehran’s new maritime exclusion zone across the Persian Gulf will alter how it enforces its position, and prepares to respond to U.S. warships and bases.

Key Economic data to watch this week:

  • September 7th, Monday: Holiday
  • September 8th, Tuesday: July Consumer Credit
  • September 9th, Wednesday:
  • September 10th, Thursday: Weekly Jobless Claims, August PPI

Today: This morning, the Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson told U.S. media that opening the Strait of Hormuz is a priority, as the world faces an “industrial catastrophe” if the crisis continues. Over the weekend, the price of oil and gas has moved higher. This morning, Gold has traded between $4,385 and $4,444, with most of the weakness in the U.S. market.

Silver

Silver also had an exciting August, hitting a high of $71.30 on August 28th, to a low of $63.20 by September 2nd. Physical and futures contracts demand are picking up in China, causing an increase in trading volume. Silver closed last Friday at $66.15 per ounce, down $0.20 per ounce for the week.

Today: As trading moved around the globe last night and this morning, Silver traded between $65.57 and $67.29 per ounce. Silver crossed the $67 per ounce level during trading in India, then saw selling during trading in London.
