Cooler CPI And PPI Boost Gold And Ease Rate Hike Bets But The Fed Needs More From Core Ahead Of September
Gold prices got a boost from a reassuringly in-line CPI report on Wednesday, and while Thursday morning’s equally benign PPI print didn’t push prices higher, the yellow metal has successfully broken out of its recent range and is holding above $4,350 on Thursday afternoon, exactly $100 below its post-CPI peak... UBS Flags Near-Rerm Gold Risks But Holds Firm On $5,000 Dollar Target
This builds directly on the rally we flagged in our earlier Gold piece, where a weak payrolls print pushed bullion to a seven-week high, and UBS's note gives that move a structural rather than purely tactical framing... Eamonn Sheridan
Gold's Biggest Headwind May Finally Be Peaking
Gold investors have spent much of 2026 confronting a frustrating paradox: the geopolitical and fiscal backdrop has arguably never looked more supportive for a safe-haven asset, yet gold has struggled in recent months as rising real interest rate expectations have dramatically increased the opportunity cost of holding a non-yielding metal... Now Is The Time To Buy Gold, BCA Sees Bullish Opportunity As Real Yields Peak
Gold's recent correction has likely run its course as the key macro headwinds that pressured the precious metal are beginning to fade, according to one Canadian research firm, which argues that real interest rates have likely peaked and the U.S. dollar will eventually turn from a headwind into a tailwind for bullion... Gold

Last week, many weak U.S. economic indicators helped keep the strong demand for precious metals. Those economic indicators and facts were:

  1. The Trump administration spent a record $432 billion more than it took in July. This was the highest monthly budget shortfall since March 2021.
  2. The U.S. Commerce Department’s Census Bureau said on Friday that Retail ‌sales dropped 0.6% last month after an unrevised 0.2% gain in June.
  3. Initial jobless claims rose from 9,000 to 209,000 for July, while the four-week average was unchanged at 199,000.
  4. The PPI report showed final-demand prices were unchanged in July and up 4.7% from a year earlier.
  5. The U.S. National Debt nearing an unbelievable $40 Trillion Dollars.

Surprisingly, there was no significant news on the status of the Iranian war, with oil prices remaining unchanged. However, there was an announcement from the People’s Bank of China saying they purchased 640,000 oz of Gold in July.

Last week, the Gold price traded between $4,232 and $4,453 per ounce, closing on Friday at $4,375, up $36 for the week. After breaking out above the $4,200 per ounce resistance level on August 5th, Gold continues to show excellent demand on the road to the next resistance level of $4,500 per ounce.

Key Economic data to watch this week:

  • August 17th, Monday:
  • August 18th, Tuesday: July housing starts
  • August 19th, Wednesday: Federal Open Market Committee report
  • August 20th, Thursday: Aug. 15th Weekly Jobless Claims
  • August 21th, Friday:

Today: In overseas trading last night, Gold traded above and below the $4,400 per ounce level, trading between $4,366 and $4,428 per ounce. When U.S. trading opened, the Gold price crossed back above that $4,400 resistance level.

Silver

After Silver's $6.03 increase during the first week of August, it closed at $63.60. Last week Silver stayed strong, trading between $61.30 and $66.55 per ounce. Silver closed last Friday at $64.850, up $1.20 per ounce. Silver moved above $65 per ounce four times last week, showing excellent demand above that key resistance level.
Silver is definitely back on a bullish path, and I expect to see a move toward $70 per ounce within the next month.

Today: Last night we saw excellent demand for Silver during trading in overseas markets, as it quickly moved above $65 per ounce. Silver moved above $66 during Chinese trading, reaching a high of $66.35 per ounce. But, saw short-term selling in India and London, taking the price down to $65.26 per ounce. After Silver trading opened in the U.S., the price moved over $66 per ounce.
