Gold

I’m very happy that the month of September is behind us, with Gold dropping over $400 per ounce during that month. Why has the price of Gold been under pressure?

The U.S. Dollar reached a 2-year high, over 102; interest rates on bonds and Treasury bills have moved higher, while oil and diesel prices have increased. Another negative for the Gold price is that China hosts the largest physical of future trading exchanges and is closed for holidays the first week of October.

Why is the Dollar moving higher? The U.S. Dollar is needed for international trade, and with the price of oil and diesel at record highs, which is costing more U.S. Dollars, it’s causing heavy demand. Plus, many hot money international traders are moving into U.S. Dollars for the higher interest rates.

I think the big question right now is what’s happening to the Gold price from here.
Well, Gold has tested the key long-term support level of $4,000 per ounce many times in July and briefly reached a low of $3,988 on July 12th before bouncing back immediately. Gold has shown excellent price support and record trading volume every time the price gets near that important $4,000 per ounce level.

The long-term picture for the Gold price has never looked better, and I expect Gold to move back above $5,000 within the next six months. But it’s the short-term that’s the big question. With the current direction of interest rates, the U.S. Dollar, oil and diesel prices, and the election coming up next month, Gold could test that $4,000 support level. If that happens, it will be an extraordinary opportunity to add to your Gold holdings.

Gold closed Friday at $4,140 per ounce, down $155 for the week.

Key Economic data to watch this week:

  • October 5th, Monday:
  • October 6th, Tuesday: U.S. Trade Balance
  • October 7th, Wednesday: Aug Consumer Credit
  • October 8th, Thursday: Weekly Jobless Claims and Monthly Wholesale Trade
  • October 9th, Friday:

Today: Last night in overseas trading, Gold started higher; when trading moved to India, Gold dropped to $4,122 per ounce. When trading reached London, Gold reached a high of $4,171 per ounce. Clearly, Gold is looking for a sound support foundation.

Silver

Last Friday, Silver closed at $60.20 per ounce, down $3.95 for the week. Silver tested the $60 per ounce support level three times last week and held. I would like to think that $60 could be a good support level; however, in the last three months, Silver has traded below, reaching a low of $55.90 on July 12th. Recently, I have seen an increase in physical demand for many of the popular Silver investment coins.

Today: Silver started today moving higher in overseas trading in London, reaching a high of $62.15 before seeing selling in the U.S.
