GOLD

The concept of denuclearization of the Korean peninsula was the primary topic of the financial markets last week. This would be good for the world and eliminate much of the war fears. South Korea has discussed this with our President. North Korea has had extensive conversations with China and South Korea. Japan sees the writing on the wall and is requesting to be part of any discussion or potential meetings.

It feels like the Berlin Wall coming down in 1989 all over again, which led to the reunification of Germany, and cost the U.S. billions in aid. Governments around the world hope that North Korea will agree to demilitarize its nuclear arsenal. If they agree, it will probably cost the U.S. over a trillion dollars in aid.

What does North Korea have to do with the price of Gold declining this week? Any lessening of the geopolitical crisis is short-term negative for precious metals. Last Thursday (Friday was a holiday), Gold closed at $1,323 per ounce, down $27 for the week but up $5 for the month of March. Every time Gold reaches the $1,320 level, we see increases in physical demand for Gold coins, jewelry, and bars on a global scale. I’m still looking for Gold to move back above the $1,350 level very soon.

Today: This morning in Asian Gold markets, there was excellent demand based on a weak U.S. Dollar and China imposing new tariffs of up to 25% on 128 U.S. imported products. Gold reached a high of $1,340 per ounce before seeing some light selling. Financial markets in many European countries are closed for the holiday, but our markets are open and the Dow Jones is down over 500 points, giving more momentum to precious metals.

Last week, Silver closed at $16.24 per ounce on Thursday (Friday was a holiday), down $0.31 for the week. Silver pretty much mirrored the direction of the Gold price the entire week. JP Morgan’s record Silver holdings is continuing to grow. Their massive holding of Silver bullion reached a new record high of 139.12 million troy ounces last week. See the article at: JP Morgan Record Silver Bullion Holding Is Extremely Bullish. Silver has increased the Silver/Gold ratio to 81.46-to-1.

Today: Silver rallied this morning at a greater percentage than Gold. Strong Asian demand for physical investment products caused Silver to reach a high of $16.72 per ounce.
