U.S. Mint Coin Sales – American Gold Eagle Proof Coins Debut

On Thursday, March 17, the United States Mint began offering the Proof versions of the 2016 American Gold Eagle product range.

The popular one-tenth-ounce Gold Eagle Proof coin sold 8,036 pieces in its first week. The one-ounce Gold Proof was next, with 6,573 ounces (coins) sold. 2,143 quarter-ounce Proof coins were sold, while the American Eagle half-ounce gold Proof coin saw the lowest sales, with only 1,969 purchased last week.

The four-coin American Gold Eagle Proof Set sold 6,738 units.

Of course, the bullion versions of the various Gold Eagles continue to sell competently. 21,000 one-ounce American Eagle gold bullion coins have been sold in March to date, with 2016 sales now totaling 177,500 ounces (coins). The tenth-ounce coin has sold 5,000 ounces so far this month (50,000 coins), for a total of 295,000 coins sold in 2016. The half-ounce bullion Gold Eagle has sold 1,000 coins in March and 30,000 overall this year. And the quarter-ounce Gold Eagle bullion coin has sold 4,000 coins in the last 23 days, with 52,000 sold since January 11.

In other news, the America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set has sold a total of 56,342 units since its March 7 debut, with last week’s sales contributing 2,551 to that number.

2016 American Gold Buffalo bullion coin sales for March sit at 5,000 units sold. Year-to-date, the Gold Buffalo has sold 58,000 ounces (coins).

And last but certainly not least, the 2016 American Silver Eagle bullion coin has sold 13,942,500 ounces since the beginning of its 30th anniversary year.

In January, the coin sold 5,954,500 ounces, while February saw a slight decline with 4,782,000 silver eagles ordered. As of March 23, 3,206,000 American Eagle Silver bullion coins have been sold this month.
