The history of using platinum for coinage dates back to the Spanish colonization of the Americas. Today, the U.S. Mint produces a series of platinum bullion and Proof coins each year. These coins, known as American Platinum Eagles, offer solid investment potential as well as intrinsic value to collectors thanks to their unique designs, which change yearly. Mint State Gold maintains an inventory of Proof and MS Platinum Eagles for sale. We’re your source for both current-year and older Eagles, all of which are in excellent condition.

American Platinum Eagle History

American Platinum Eagles are made of 99.95% pure platinum and available in 1/10 troy ounce ($10), ¼ troy ounce ($25), ½ troy ounce ($50), and one troy ounce ($100) denominations. The U.S. Mint has produced bullion and Proof versions of the coin every year since 1997. Burnished Platinum Eagles were released between 2006 and 2008 and sold directly to collectors by the U.S. Mint.

Design Variations

Platinum Eagles are unique in that Proof versions feature a different reverse design every year. Occasionally, images and motifs are carried over from year to year. For example, Proof Eagles from 1998 to 2002 shared the theme of "Vistas of Liberty," with each year's coin depicting an eagle soaring over a different part of the country.

MS and Burnished Platinum Eagles, by contrast, have used the same reverse design each year. All feature a common obverse face: an engraving of the Statue of Liberty created by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti.

Investing in Platinum American Eagle Coins

American Platinum Eagles are considered a commodity rather than a rare coin. Their value lies primarily in the metal itself, which is worth considerably more than the coin's face value. People buy platinum coins for the same reasons they invest in other precious metals — they’re a way of diversifying an investment portfolio beyond stocks and bonds, and can as a result act as a hedge against uncertainty and inflation. It’s also possible to place Platinum Eagles in an IRA, which can have some tax advantages for investors.
