$1 Gold Type 3
The Type 3 $1 Gold Indian Princess Head, also known as the Large Head, debuted in 1856. Designer James B. Longacre, who had also designed both the Type 1 and Type 2 $1 Gold Indian Princess coins, made the portrait on the Type 3 gold dollar larger and flatter to help alleviate the strike issues that had occurred with the Type 2 gold dollars. It seems the third time was the charm, and the Type 3 gold dollar's size and durability proved satisfactory. Production continued without interruption for more than three decades, until $1 gold coins were discontinued in 1889. $1 Gold coins were produced before 1933, giving them additional privacy benefits since they are exempt from 1099 reporting forms.
