$3 Gold Indian
The only $3 U.S. coin ever minted, the $3 Indian Princess gold coin is considered one of the most unusual coins struck by the U.S. Mint. Produced from 1854-1889, the $3 Indian Princess set the stage for a close connection between postal and coinage history. The large cents then in circulation were cumbersome and unpopular, and this new $3 denomination was designed to facilitate the purchase of stamps, which were three-cents at the time. The three-dollar denomination quietly ceased in 1889 and its future popularity with collectors and investors vastly exceeded the public reception it enjoyed during its circulating life. The $3 Gold Princess was also produced before 1933, giving them additional privacy benefits since they are exempt from 1099 reporting forms.
