These $3 Gold Indian Princess Head coins are Preferred Dates with a Mint State Grade of MS61 from either PCGS or NGC. Preferred Dates for the $3 Gold Indians are 1878 or 1887-1889, all struck at the Philadelphia mint. Mint State Gold selects the dates you receive and feels confident that you will be very pleased with the selections.

These MS61 coins are solid examples of their grade with original mint luster still apparent on the coin. In keeping with the grade, the surfaces have a fair amount of bag or scuff marks on them, resulting primarily from decades of transportation and storage. With some heavy abrasions, yet overall very nice eye-appeal, these coins are prime examples of uncirculated quality MS61 coins.

These impressive $3 Indian Princess Gold coins are true collector’s pieces of nineteenth century American coinage history. Produced from 1854-1889, production of the $3 Indian Princess set the stage for a close connection between postal and coinage history. The large cents then in circulation were cumbersome and unpopular, and this new $3 denomination was designed to facilitate the purchase of three-cent stamps. Unfortunately, at no time during the 35-year span of this denomination did public demand justify the production costs of the $3 Gold coin.

The three-dollar denomination quietly ceased in 1889 and America's coinage was certainly more prosaic without this odd denomination gold piece, though its future popularity with collectors and investors vastly exceeded the tepid public reception it enjoyed during its circulating life.
