These $1 Indian Princess Type 2 Gold Dollars are Popular Dates with a Mint State grade of MS61 from either PCGS or NGC. Popular Dates for the $1 Indian Type 2 coins range from 1854-1855 struck at the Philadelphia mint. These MS61 coins are fine examples of their grade with original mint luster still apparent. The surfaces may have small contact marks, visible scuff marks, or defects on the face. The overall visual appeal is quite nice and these are wonderful examples of uncirculated quality MS61 coins.

With the birth of the Type 2 $1 Gold Indian Princess Head, also known as the Small Head, in 1854, the Dollar coins were made larger in diameter and thinner. Designer James B. Longacre changed the portrait on the obverse of the Type 2 Gold Dollar to a feather headdress on a female, generally referred to as the Indian Princess Head or large-sized type (Type 2). The encircling 13 stars were removed and replaced by the inscription “United States of America”.

The Type 2 coin production only spanned three years before it was permanently retired to be replaced by the Type 3 Large Head Indian. This limited production run makes the Type 2 $1 Gold Indian among the most desired Type coin in U.S. coinage history.

Early Release coins are minted during the first 30 days of a series' production, using the first dies forged by the Mint for that particular series. The use of these first dies typically results in a higher quality strike and finer details, making them prized among collectors and investors both for their increased scarcity and added beauty.
