Description

Produced by the prestigious Australian Perth Mint, the 2023 1 oz Silver Kookaburra represents the 34th annual issue of the series and it is offered to you in Brilliant Uncirculated condition with a certificate of authenticity and an original protective acrylic capsule. First launched in 1990, the series represented the first official silver bullion series of The Perth Mint.

Struck in 99.99% fine silver, the coin is a legal tender backed by the Australian Government under the Australian Currency Act of 1965, with a denomination of one Australian dollar. The obverse features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. In this 2015 effigy from Jody Clark, we see Her Late Majesty in right-profile relief wearing the George IV State Diadem. Along the rim, there are inscriptions reading Elizabeth II, Australia, and one dollar as the monetary denomination. The reverse depicts a kookaburra couple perched in close proximity on two separate tree branches, with a well-crafted display of waratah blossoms below them. Also found is a micro-laser engraved security element only visible with the aid of magnification. The inscriptions Kookaburra, The Perth Mint’s P mint-mark, the 2023 year-date along with the weight and purity are also included.

A symbol of the Australian outback, the Kookaburras (species Dacelo Novaeguineae) belong to the Australian kingfisher family. They are famous for their call, which sounds like a laughter. They are the largest of the kingfishers, known for their large bill that has a black upper mandible (top beak), and a tan lower mandible. This gray-brown, woodland-dwelling bird reaches a length of 43 cm (17 inches), with an 8- to 10-cm (3.2- to 4-inch) beak. In its native habitat it eats invertebrates and small vertebrates, including venomous snakes. Defending their territory year-round, a monogamous pair of these birds lays two clutches of two to four white eggs in its nest in a tree hole. The young often remain with the parents and help raise the next year’s brood. Also sometimes called the bushman’s clock, the kookaburra is heard very early in the morning and just after sunset. The related blue-winged kookaburra (D. leachii), which does not laugh, is found across northern Australia.
