This is an exquisite Gem graded 1898-A 20 FR French Angel. Graded MS66 by PCGS, this attractive French Gold rarity has magnificent eye-appeal, a strong strike with excellent details. The original mint luster is absolutely dazzling. Current PCGS population shows ONLY 3 graded MS66 and NONE graded higher, making this Angel one of the finest in existence. This French Gold Angel is considered a showcase piece in any European Gold collection.

French Angels are regarded worldwide to be one of the most attractive coins ever made. The Angel is also considered to be the most popular design for jewelry in Europe. The obverse (front) depicts the Standing Genius writing the constitution with a rooster on the right and a column on the left. The reverse (back) features the date and denomination encircled in a wreath with the words LIBERTE EGALITE FRATERNITE (Liberty, Equality, Fraternity) bordered on the edge. The phrase LIBERTE EGALITE FRATERNITE is also engraved on the edge of the coin.

Best known for bringing good luck to their owners, the “Lucky Angel” has a fascinating legend behind it dating back to the French Revolution. The legend began during the Reign of Terror in the mid-1790s, when the coin’s designer claimed to have been saved from the guillotine by the lucky Angel coin in his pocket. Almost from the beginning, Gold Angels were regarded as lucky charms.

Minted in Paris, this 20 Francs Angel has impeccable detail for being 120 years old. The 20 Fr. French Angel has a Gold content of .1867 oz AGW (actual gold weight).
