For much of the 19th and 20th centuries these French 20 Franc gold coins, known as ‘Napoleons”, were saved by wealthy French investors hoping to hedge against currency deterioration. Whenever you hear stories of Frenchmen with 'gold under the mattress', Napoleon gold coins are most likely the gold you would have found there.
These French Napoleon Gold coins are ungraded, circulated coins, in circulated condition. Dates range from 1852-1870. Mint State Gold selects the dates you receive and feels confident that you will be very pleased with the selections.
Napoleon III, the nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte, was elected president in 1852 after the Revolution of 1848, and proclaimed emperor four years later. Serving as emperor of France from 1852 until 1870, he strove to restore the glory of France to the lofty stature attained under his famous uncle. His rule was undermined by a succession of political blunders and in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, he met defeat at the hands of the Prussians. Within days, the weakened Napoleon III was unseated by a new revolution and left France for England where he died in 1873, failing to restore the glory of Napoleonic France.
Minted from 1852-1870, with a gold fineness of .900, these fine gold coins underwent three design changes during their 18 year production history. Originally, the obverse (front) featured a bust portrait of Napoleon with his full name written as 'LOUIS-NAPOLEON BONAPARTE' with no title, and the reverse (back) displayed the denomination, date, and the nation name 'REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE'.
The second revision was very similar to the first with two main differences; the name of the ruler was changed to 'NAPOLEON III' and the title 'EMPEREUR' was added. On the reverse, the name of the nation was changed to 'EMPIRE FRANCAIS'. The final revision emerged in 1861 and featured a coat of arms and a wreath-wearing Napoleon III.
