Presenting a Lot of 5 French Gold Napoleons in About Uncirculated condition. These About Uncirculated coins each contain .1867 oz of gold (for a total of .9335 oz). They have nice surfaces and lovely details. These French Napoleon Gold coins are ungraded, circulated coins, in AU (about uncirculated) condition. Dates range from 1852-1870. Mint State Gold selects the dates you receive and feels confident that you will be very pleased with the selections.

For much of the 19th and 20th centuries these French 20 Franc gold coins, known as ‘Napoleons”, were saved by wealthy French investors hoping to hedge against currency deterioration. Whenever you hear stories of Frenchmen with 'gold under the mattress', Napoleon gold coins are most likely the gold you would have found there.

Napoleon III, the nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte, was elected president in 1852 after the Revolution of 1848, and proclaimed emperor four years later. Serving as emperor of France from 1852 until 1870, he strove to restore the glory of France to the lofty stature attained under his famous uncle. His rule was undermined by a succession of political blunders and in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, he met defeat at the hands of the Prussians. Within days, the weakened Napoleon III was unseated by a new revolution and left France for England where he died in 1873, failing to restore the glory of Napoleonic France.

The obverse features Napoleon facing right with the inscription "NAPOLEON III EMPEREUR". The reverse has a wreath encircling the denomination and the year.
