Background and Production

American Buffalo coins were first minted in 2006 following the passage of the Presidential $1 Coin Act the previous year. They were introduced specifically to meet the need for a 24-karat, 0.9999 gold product.

The U.S. Mint's West Point facility produces all American Buffalos. Initially, a $50, one-ounce version was the only denomination available. However, the coin’s immediate popularity led to the distinctive 2008 production of $5 (1/10 oz.), $10 (1/4 oz.), and $25 (1/2 oz.) versions.

Design History

The American Buffalo series is notable for its adoption of the famous Indian Head Nickel design of 1913, arguably one of the best-known coin designs of all time.

Like the Indian Head, the American Buffalo features a portrait in profile of a Native American chief on the obverse, and a Bison on the reverse. The newer coin adds the markings, “$50 1 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD” and “IN GOD WE TRUST” on its back.

Why Buy American Buffalo Proof Coins?

American Buffalo Proof coins are distinct from standard business strike coins in that they are produced almost exclusively for the collectors' market. To highlight their classic design, a particular die process creates sharper and more intricate details.

In 2008, the U.S. Mint produced a limited number of burnished American Buffalo coins. These were created using a similar minting process as the Proof versions, omitting the final polishing step. Many collectors prefer the unique look of burnished Proof coins and go to great lengths to seek these rarities out.
