Background and Production

American Buffalo coins were first minted in 2006 following the passage of the Presidential $1 Coin Act the previous year. They were introduced specifically to meet the need for a 24-karat, 0.9999 gold product.

The U.S. Mint's West Point facility produces all American Buffalos. Initially, a $50, one-ounce version was the only denomination available. However, the coin’s immediate popularity led to the distinctive 2008 production of $5 (1/10 oz.), $10 (1/4 oz.), and $25 (1/2 oz.) versions.

Design History

The American Buffalo series is notable for its adoption of the famous Indian Head Nickel design of 1913, arguably one of the best-known coin designs of all time.

Like the Indian Head, the American Buffalo features a portrait in profile of a Native American chief on the obverse, and a Bison on the reverse. The newer coin adds the markings, “$50 1 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD” and “IN GOD WE TRUST” on its back.
