Description

Presenting a 1961 Gold Katanga 5 Francs coin in uncirculated condition. This Gold coin has smooth fields and crisp devices. The details are very well defined and the original mint luster is beautiful. This is a wonderful 5 Franc coin that contains .3857 ounces of Gold.

The obverse features a bunch of bananas within a circle. The reverse depicts the Baluba Cross with the value, date, and the inscription: "Banque Nationale".

This is a very interesting numismatic find. When the Congo was granted independence in 1960, the autonomous Katanga people seceded almost immediately and formed the nation of Katanga. Three years later, in 1963, Katanga rejoined the Congo. As a result coinage from Katanga is in extremely limited supply and is nearly impossible to find.
