Description

Here is a Set of 2 1788 Colonial Massachusetts Half Cent / Cent. The Half Cent is in Extra Fine condition and the Cent is in Fine condition. The obverse features the figure of an Indian with a bow & arrow, and a star with the words "COMMON WEALTH". The reverse features a spread eagle with the denomination in the middle of the crest, with the words "MASSACHUSETTS" and the date below. These are in the World Coins book ask KM# 19 & 20.4.

The coinage of Massachusets copper cents and half cents in 1787 and 1788 was under the direction of Joshua Witherle. These were the first coins bearing the denomination "cent" as would later be established by Congress. Many varieties exist, the most valuable being that with arrows in the eagle's right talon.
