Description

Presenting a 1909-S VDB Cent graded F15 by PCGS. This small cent is considered one of the most desirable U.S. coins ever.

Designer Victor David Brenner placed his intials on the reverse of the coin. It was not unusual for a designer to put their name or initials in the design. However, the placement of his intials (VDB), on the lower reverse, was not inconspicious and many felt it was an illegal act of advertisement. The U.S. Mint responded by removing the initals altogether and stopped production of the VDB cents.

Adding to the desirability of the 1909-S VDB cents is the incredibly low mintage. Because the Mint stopped production of the VDB cents so quickly, the San Francisco Mint only managed to produce 484,000, the smallest mintage of the series. The low mintage and the story of the intials propelled the 09-S VDB cent into scarcity and popularity.
