Popular Dates for the $1 Liberty Type 1 coins range from 1851 – 1854 struck at either the Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega, New Orleans, or San Francisco mint. Sparked by the California Gold Rush, Congress authorized coinage of the Gold Dollar with the Act of March 3, 1849. The smallest coin in U.S. history, the first Gold Dollars are known as the Type 1 Liberty Head, or small-sized Type 1. During their six years of production, Type 1 Gold dollars were struck at five different mints: Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega, New Orleans and San Francisco, though only the Philadelphia and Dahlonega mints issued them every year.
