The $2.50 Indian Head Gold Quarter Eagle features the highly collectible incuse or sunken relief design. This means that the fine details of the coin are sunken into the gold surfaces. This design was intended to reduce wear and tear and replacement costs on the gold coins- the circulating money of the day. However, the public believed (wrongly) that the sunken in surfaces were prone to collecting germs, therefore making the coins unhealthy for circulation. The incuse method was eventually discontinued due to public pressure.
