Scarce Type 1 $20 Liberty, nice details, well struck devices, pleasing eye-appeal... Presenting a beautiful 1862 San Francisco $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Type 1, graded XF40 by NGC. In keeping with the grade, this Extra Fine Double Eagle shows light- to-moderate wear, and much original detail remains; slight abrasions are present, and no serious distractions are evident. Wear is seen mostly on the high marks of the well struck devices and the surfaces are pleasing. Overall, a very nice circulated $20 Liberty in XF40 condition.

Due to the California Gold Rush in the 1840's and the large amount of gold being sent east the United States Mint was commissioned to start producing gold coins, and thus the $20 Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle was born. Designed by James B. Longacre, the gold coin began circulation in the 1850's and was an immediate success. By the 1930's gold coins were recalled back from the public by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and were sent overseas for international transactions, melted down, or stored in bank vaults making the entire Gold Double Eagle coin series rare and desirable.
