Description

Presenting an 1863-S $20 Liberty that was recovered from the S.S. Republic wreckage and graded MS61 by NGC. This Gold Double Eagle features bright surfaces that are smooth for the grade and lack any major distracting abrasions. The devices are nicely struck and gleam with an outstanding luster that shines across the straw-gold surfaces of this Liberty. The sinking of the S.S. Republic in 1865 was a significant event in maritime and numismatic history and gives this $20 Liberty significance that makes it ideal for the avid collector.

From an original mintage that is just shy of 1 million, few 1863-S $20 Libertys remain to have graded higher than this MS61. Current NGC population shows ONLY 21 have graded MS61 and ONLY 23 have graded finer. This is a rare opportunity to add a historically significant and rare Liberty to your collection.
