Description

This 1865-S $20 Liberty graded MS64 by NGC was recovered from the Brother Jonathan Shipwreck. In choice uncirculated condition, this Gold Double Eagle features incredibly smooth fields, crisp devices, and very nice original mint luster. This shipwreck Gold coin has excellent eye-appeal and is certainly a wonderful showpiece for a Registry Set or a historical collection.

Current NGC census shows, of the 1865-S Brother Jonathan recovered coins, ONLY 56 graded MS64 and ONLY 54 graded higher.

Brother Jonathan was a steamboat traveling from San Francisco to Vancouver Island. It carried gold, cargo, and over 200 passengers. It sank in 1865 near Crescent City, CA. Only 18 passengers survived the shipwreck and the precious cargo was lost to the bottom of the sea. Multiple salvage attempts, from as far back as 1916 to as recent as 2000, have recovered many of the Gold bars and coins, such as this beautiful uncirculated example.
