Description

This beautiful 1908-D "No Motto" $20 Saint Gaudens has graded Choice MS64 by PCGS. The bright, lustrous surfaces accentuate the well-struck devices. The fields are smooth and satiny. With lovely eye-appeal, this Gold Double Eagle will make an excellent addition to any collection or portfolio.

Produced during the second year of St. Gaudens mintages, this Saint is also of the scarce "No Motto" variety. The 1908-D "No Motto" Double Eagle is occasionally referred to as the "Godless $20" because the phrase "IN GOD WE TRUST" is not present on the coin as it is on most US currency. Congressional influence and public demand restored the motto in the latter part of 1908, where it remained until the series ended in 1933. This example is a product of the first half of 1908 when the motto was removed from the design.
