Well-struck, satiny fields, original mint luster… This 1916-S $20 Saint Gaudens graded choice MS64 by PCGS is a fine example of its grade. The fields are smooth and both the obverse and reverse glow with a straw-gold hue. With excellent detail and original mint luster, this double eagle possesses all the character and charm expected from what is widely considered to be the most beautiful coin ever designed and minted.

Augustus Saint-Gaudens was the first sculptor to ever design an American coin. In late 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt called upon the renowned American sculptor to redesign the U.S. $20 Gold Double Eagle coin. Roosevelt considered U.S. coinage to be ‘ugly’ and it was his desire for American coins to be as beautiful as the coins of ancient Greece. Production of the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle coins continued from 1907 until 1933, with a brief two year hiatus from 1917-1918. More than half a century after production ceased on the magnificent gems, the U.S. mint bestowed an incredible honor upon The Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle in 1986 when they decided to place the design on the obverse (front) of the American Eagle gold bullion coin, the United States #1 gold coin produced today!
