Description

Here is a 2006-S $5 Gold commemorative proof coin with its original Mint Box and Certificate of Authenticity. This Proof commemorates the 100th Anniversary of the San Francisco Old Mint's survival in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fires.

On April 18, 1906 a powerful earthquake (estimated magnitude of 7.8) woke the city of San Francisco and the surrounding area. Soon after, fires ignited and began to consume the city. The resulting wreckage was absolutely devastating for the city. As such, the survival of the San Francisco Old Mint is no small feat.

This $5 Gold Commemorative Proof was minted in San Francisco and contains .2419 troy ounces of gold. The obverse features an image of the San Francisco Old Mint based on the drawing by architect A.B. Mullet. The reverse is a replica of the 1906 Half Eagle Coronet Liberty reverse by Christian Gobrecht.
